9 Tips to Keep Your New Year's Resolution on Track

BAY CITY, Mich. –– It's 2017! You've probably got a New Year's Resolution in mind, even if you have vocalized it yet. If you're serious about it, it's a long road to success and December 31st, and we have nine tips to keep your New Year's resolution on track. Believe in yourself and you can make it happen!

9 Tips to Keep Your New Year's Resolution on Track

Be Realistic - Make sure that your goals are attainable and realistic. Cutting a bad habit completely out of your life, cold turkey, is not likely going to work. Think about what you really know you can accomplish, start with that as your goal, and then expand on it from there.

Outline You Plan - Preparedness is you best ally to following through with your resolution. In correlation with being realistic about your resolution, break it up into segments or steps. Make the mountain into a bunch of molehills that you can climb each day.

Talk About It - Tell your friends and family about your resolution! They will help support you and keep you accountable to it.

Track Your Progress - Sometimes it's hard to see your actual progress as it's happening. Track the days, and weeks, and incremental steps that you have reached in your pursuit of achieving your goal.

Reward Yourself - Have a treat or get yourself something nice to celebrate the accomplishment on making through a certain amount of time. This will begin to develop a positive reinforcement to your new habit. Also, to help keep your resolution, don't reward yourself with something that will contradict it.

Don't Be Too Hard On Yourself - You're going to good days and bad days. Sometimes it will be a breeze and other times you'll want to abandon your resolution. Like we mentioned above, the best way to stay positive is to track the incremental steps you accomplish and to celebrate them.

Make a "Pros" and "Cons" List What happens if you succeed? What happens if you don't? This list will help keep you motivated during the roughest days of keeping your resolution.

Stay the Course - It has been scientifically proven that it takes us 21 days for something to become a habit, and six months for it to become part of our personality.

Keep Trying - If you find yourself breaking your resolution, just dust yourself off and get back on track. One misstep (or a handful) does not mean your entire year/resolution is ruined. There's no resolution police to keep you from trying again.
