Chevrolet Camaro’s History at the Indy 500

Chevrolet Camaro’s History at the Indy 500

BAY CITY, Mich. – On May 29th the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro SS served as the official pace car for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. Chevrolet has held the honor of serving as the official pace car 27 times, that is more than any other manufacturer. The Chevrolet Camaro has been the official pace car 9 of those times. In celebration of the 100th race, take a look below at Chevrolet Camaro’s history at the Indy 500.

1967 Camaro RS/SS
As the first Camaro to serve as the Indy 500 pace car, this model was also the original Camaro built.

1969 Camaro RS/SS
This pace car made its mark as becoming one of the most recognizable pace cars in the speedway’s history with orange-over white paint scheme.

1982 Camaro Z28
The Camaro Z28 introduced the third generation of the Camaro and was driven by Indy 500 winner, Jim Rathmann.

1993 Camaro Z28
In 1993 the Camaro Z28 showcased daring back and white paint scheme highlights with multicolored ribbons and matching interior.

2010 Camaro SS (2009 and 2010 Indianapolis 500)

The 2010 Camaro SS made its mark at the famous brickyard in its first and only back-to-back appearance. First in 2009 the Camaro was driven by “Transformers" star Josh Duhamel, and then in 2010 it was driven by “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts (who was only the second woman to ever drive an Indy pace car).

2011 Camaro SS

In 2011 the Camaro debuted for its third year in a row as the pace car. That year it had also paid homage to the 1969 pace car and was dressed in white and orange.

2014 Camaro Z/28

This version of the Camaro pace car became the most track-focused Camaro with a 7.0L LS7 V-8 engine, high performance brake rotors, and 19 inch aluminum wheels.

2017 Camaro SS 50th Anniversary Edition

This year the Camaro sported “100th Running of the Indianapolis 500” graphics in celebration of the 100th anniversary, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Camaro.
