5 Chevrolet Camaro Secrets

5 Chevrolet Camaro Secrets

BAY CITY, Mich. - Since it's release by GM in September of 1966, the Chevy Camaro has experienced extreme changes to its interior and exterior components - all while keeping the great body and speed that keeps it as firmly planted as one of America's favorite vehicles. However, there are 5 Chevrolet Camaro secrets that you probably didn't know:

1. When GM was deciding on names, the Camaro was almost called the Panther. In fact, it was referred to as the Chevrolet Panther and Chevy even had the molds made for the Panther emblem! However, GM liked the two names beginning with "C", so the Chevrolet Camaro won.

2. The name "Camaro" actually has no meaning. It's simply a name that was invented and has no actual meaning in any language. Many argue that "Camaro" means "friend" in French, but this is just a myth.

3. The Camaro was actually imported from Canada. Although it's no longer an import, the Camaro was built in St. Therese, Quebec from 1993 until 2002. Hard to believe, eh?

4. Between the years of 1988 and 1991, the most commonly stolen car in the U.S was the 1986 Chevy Camaro. In fact, 1 out of every 5 built in the year 1986 ended up being stolen.

5. The Chevy Camaro has "outpaced" the Ford Mustang. This means that the Camaro has been the official pace car at the Indianapolis 500 six times, while the Mustang has only been the pace car for three. Only the Corvette has paced more 500s than the Camaro, with a record 12 times!
